Pope prays for victims of attacks

As thousands gather in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis calls for prayers for victims of recent attacks in both Indonesia and Burkina Faso.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) POPE FRANCIS SAYING:

“I would like to invite all of you together to turn to God and pray for the victims of the attacks that have taken place in recent days in Indonesia and Burkina Faso. May the Lord welcome them into his house, and support the commitment of the international community to build peace. Let us pray to the Madonna.”

The death toll in Indonesia’s militant attack rose to eight on Sunday. Islamic State is claiming responsibility for the assault that left at least four attackers among the dead.

The assault in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, Friday killed at least 28 people from at least 18 countries, marking a major escalation of Islamist militancy in West Africa.

The Pope asks for prayers.

“I wish you all a good Sunday. And, please, do not forget to pray for me. Have a good lunch and goodbye!”

Later on Sunday, Pope Francis will makes his first pontifical visit to Rome’s Great Synagogue.
