TORONTO RAPTORS 106 – 103 ORLANDO MAGIC

1. LUIS SCOLA BEING INTERVIEWED

2. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LUIS SCOLA (TORONTO FORWARD) SAYS:

“We go home happy, we got a couple more games. It is going to be challenging to come back home because you know we come here and it is a little bit of a hustle – the time-change, playing in a place you are not used to, all these things we did to play this game. But both teams were going through these things so there is no advantage for any of the parts. Now we go back home and play a team that didn’t do all this so they got a little bit of an edge. So we got to be very sharp in terms of what do we do in order to recover from this trip very quickly and be ready to play on Monday.”

3. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PATRICK PATTERSON (TORONTO FORWARD) SAYS:

“Yes hopefully third time is the charm. We are totally different to last year with our new additions: Cory Joseph, Luis, Bismack Biyombo. Each guy on this team has improved, we’re gelling, we’re having fun out on the court and we are more of a defensive team these days.”

4. (SOUNDBITE) (English) VICTOR OLADIPO (ORLANDO GUARD) SAYS:

“It’s a tough day, it kind of sucks that we lost. It’s just a tough loss for us. I felt that we played better in the second half but we got to find a way to do that for 40 minutes. So it sucks right now but I think we just need to improve on our second half defensing to be in a good place.”

STORY: Toronto Raptors beat the Orlando Magic Magic 106-103 in overtime in a regular NBA game played in London, UK on Thursday (January 14).

It was the Magic’s sixth loss in seven games, and Toronto’s fourth straight win.

Point guard Kyle Lowry scored 24 points and backup point guard Cory Joseph scored 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Shooting guard DeMar DeRozan added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Raptors.

The game in London’s O2 Arena was before an international crowd with spectators from across Europe travelling to London to watch. The national anthems of Canada, the United States and United Kingdom were played before the game began.

The two teams had both played a game in North America on Saturday (January 9), then flew to London for the game on January 14 before flying back for their next fixtures on January 18.

“We go home happy, we got a couple more games,” said Toronto forward Luis Scola. “It is going to be challenging to come back home because you know we come here and it is a little bit of a hustle – the time-change, playing in a place you are not used to, all these things we did to play this game. But both teams were going through these things so there is no advantage for any of the parts. Now we go back home and play a team that didn’t do all this so they got a little bit of an edge. So we got to be very sharp in terms of what do we do in order to recover from this trip very quickly and be ready to play on Monday.”

While the Magic are chasing good results, Toronto are also looking to improve. Twice they have won a franchise record of games in a season but failed to advance further than the first round of the playoffs.

“Hopefully third time is the charm,” Patrick Patterson, Toronto forward said after the game. “We are totally different to last year with our new additions: Cory Joseph, Luis, Bismack Biyombo. Each guy on this team has improved, we’re gelling, we’re having fun out on the court and we are more of a defensive team these days.”

Orlando guard Victor Oladipo scored 27 points and Evan Fournier 21 in the game.

“It’s a tough day, it kind of sucks that we lost,” Oladipo said after. “It’s just a tough loss for us. I felt that we played better in the second half but we got to find a way to do that for 40 minutes. So it sucks right now but I think we just need to improve on our second half defensing to be in a good place.”
