“First of all, I’m pleased. I’m happy to be here and with the players. I feel very at ease, but the most important thing for me is that the players are okay. One of those is Karim (Benzema). He appears to be well and Karim can always improve, always. He is at a level where he’s playing phenomenally, but players can always improve. What I ask of the players is to be okay in order to play (well in) their matches. What I want tomorrow is that the team play well in the game. Nothing more”

3. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ZIDANE SAYING OF THE CURRENTLY SUSPENDED TRANSFER BAN:

“As you know I don’t want to get involved in that mess. You know what I’m going to tell you? This is what I’m going to tell you: the only thing that I am thinking about, me, Zinedine Zidane, is the game tomorrow. That’s all I’m interested in, the three points tomorrow. Then we’ll see what happens, if we can or can’t (sign players). We’ll have to wait and see in the Summer”

STORY: Real Madrid prepared for their La Liga clash at home to Espanyol on Sunday (January 31), the game coming just two days after the suspension pending an appeal to FIFA of their ban on signing new players for the next two transfer windows.

Head coach Zinedine Zidane had practically his entire squad out on the pitch at Real Madrid’s training ground at Valdebebas in the Spanish capital;

The Real Madrid players took part in several different technique exercises in chilly temperatures. Sunday’s match against Espanyol will be Zidane’s fourth at the helm. A lot of attention has been focussed on Real Madrid and particularly French international Karim Benzema in recent months, due to his suspected involvement in a blackmail attempt against France teammate Mathieu Valbuena; the forward could face criminal charges.

Zidane mentioned Benzema in his news conference, but only in reference to football.

“First of all, I’m pleased. I’m happy to be here and with the players. I feel very at ease but the most important thing for me is that the players are okay. One of those is Karim. He appears to be well and Karim can always improve, always. He is at a level where he’s playing phenomenally but players can always improve. What I ask of the players is to be okay in order to play (well in) their matches. What I want tomorrow is that the team play well in the game. Nothing more,” said the coach.

Real Madrid need to pick up a victory if they wish to remain in the tight battle for the league title. They currently sit third in the table behind local rivals Atletico Madrid and current league champions Barcelona.

Real Madrid’s game against Espanyol takes place after the club’s ban by FIFA for breaching rules on signing non-Spanish under-18 players was suspended. City rivals Atletico Madrid were also handed the same ban and have also had it suspended.

Both clubs announced they would appeal after being given the punishments at the beginning of this year. The FIFA probe concerned players featuring in competitions with Atletico from 2007 to 2014 and with Real from 2005 to 2014. La Liga leaders Barcelona were handed a similar penalty in April 2014 for breaching the same regulations that prevent the registration of minors in any country other than their own, except in specific circumstances.

“As you know I don’t want to get involved in that mess. You know what I’m going to tell you? This is what I’m going to tell you. The only thing that I am thinking about, me Zinedine Zidane, is the game tomorrow. That’s all I’m interested in – the three points tomorrow. Then we’ll see what happens – if we can or can’t (sign players). We’ll have to wait and see in the summer,” said Zidane.
