“The lowlights are always the easy ones. We have only had two main low ones, and that was Monaco, when I was 22-23 seconds in the lead and then I finished third in the end through the wrong call in the pit-stops. And then I started pole in Hungary and finished sixth. Those are the two main low ones. Also, I broke up with my girlfriend in the beginning of the year so that is another low point. And then the high moments are, of course, winning in Austin, winning in Melbourne, China – all the wins really. There are lots and lots of high moments, much more than lows.”

“I think Formula One in general needs a shape-up, a re-jig, in terms of car rules and all these sort of things. To make racing more fun, with more over-taking and these kind of things, that will bring more fans in and bring teams closer to each other.”

STORY: It has been yet another turbulent, varied and ultimately successful year for three-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has he heads into the final race of the season with the title already in the bag.

Hamilton, who secured his second successive title with Mercedes at the United States Grand Prix in October, will be hoping to end the season with a victory full of symbolism at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday (November 29).

The 30-year-old is chasing his 44th win on the 44th anniversary of the founding of the United Arab Emirates in car 44.

The Briton used the number 44 in his karting days and preferred to have it on his car this season instead of the number one that he would be entitled to as champion.

Overall, Hamilton is heading into the season finale in relaxed fashion with both the drivers and constructors titles wrapped up in a dominant season.

However, the season itself hasn’t always been plain-sailing for Hamilton who has clashed with Mercedes team mate and long-time rival Nico Rosberg on numerous occasions.

The two drivers, who have competed since their karting days as children, have pushed each other all the way over the past two seasons, with Hamilton ultimately successful, claiming the title in 2014 and 2015.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday (November 26), Hamilton said the relationship would always be tense due to the nature of competition.

“It is much better than it was last year. Naturally still tense, but that is how relationships are when you are fighting and competing with someone. It is intense competition but generally really relaxed. It is what it is. It isn’t like we are best friends or anything,” said Hamilton.

“Next year I think we will be another year older. We will have had this experience from this year and we will for sure have this many problems, if not less hopefully. It will continue for as long as we drive together,” he added.

Although the season has ultimately proved successful for Hamilton, it hasn’t been a campaign free from pain, both on the track and off it.

The main lowlight came for Hamilton when a Mercedes pit-stop mistake at the Monaco Grand Prix meant Hamilton was pipped to the checkered flag by Rosberg.

Hamilton has now not won at Monaco since 2008.

Furthermore, Hamilton also mentioned his high-profile split from long-time girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger as a low point of the season.

“The lowlights are always the easy ones. We have only had two main low ones, and that was Monaco, when I was 22-23 seconds in the lead and then I finished third in the end through the wrong call in the pit-stops. And then I started pole in Hungary and finished sixth. Those are the two main low ones. Also, I broke up with my girlfriend in the beginning of the year so that is another low point,” he said.

However, Hamilton was quick to point out there had been more highs than lows over an incredibly successful season that sees him hold a 66 point lead in the drivers standings.

“And then the high moments are, of course, winning in Austin, winning in Melbourne, China – all the wins really. There are lots and lots of high moments, much more than lows,” he maintained.

Partly due to Mercedes’ dominance over the past two years, coming off the back of a similar era of supremacy through Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, and the lack of over-taking and ferocious race action, the sport has faced criticism in recent weeks.

Hamilton agrees, saying changes need to be made to the cars for Formula One to become more exciting again.

“I think Formula One in general needs a shape-up, a re-jig, in terms of car rules and all these sort of things. To make racing more fun, with more over-taking and these kind of things, that will bring more fans in and bring teams closer to each other,” he said.
