Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools get ready for Carnival
ROUGH CUT – SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION
Drummers, dancers and revellers filled the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for technical rehearsals for the city’s famous Carnival parade.
The red-and-white-clad dancers from the Unidos da Viradouro samba school danced energetically to the beat of the group’s samba drummers.
Despite the festive atmosphere the Carnival processions are a serious competition for bragging rights among Rio’s mostly poor communities.
Samba schools are judged on elements such as choreography, atmosphere, organization, and singing.
Viradouro is one of the favourites for the Group B title this year — but they’re hoping to make a return to the Elite category.
Rio’s Carnival begins on February 5.
