Rohtak, Dec 22 (ANI): The court awarded death sentence to seven men convicted of gang-raping and murdering a woman in Rohtak earlier this year. The incident came as a grim reminder of the horrifying December 16, 2012, Delhi gang-rape case as the victim in this year’s incident was also subjected to gruesome torture by the convicts before being murdered. The woman from Nepal, in her 20s, was mentally challenged and was staying with her sister for treatment.Prosecution lawyer, Surender Pahwa, said the prosecution had sought death penalty as minimum punishment for the convicts. Day-to-day court hearings in the case began in October and the judgment came in a span of two months. Prosecution presented 57 witnesses in the case while defense presented three witnesses. Victim’s sister said the family would only be relieved once the convicts are finally executed. A wave of public protests fuelled by the fatal Delhi gang-rape jolted many and forced the Government to enact stiffer penalties against rape convicts.
