“He wants to work, he wants to learn. You see some of the younger players nowadays in football, they haven’t really got that attitude. It’s great to see and he’s getting the rewards for it because he’s some talent and if he keeps going he’ll be a real star for this club and for England.”

“With players like that you want to let them just play, you don’t want to try and teach them how to play football because they can play football. You want them to just play and have that freedom to go and play and express themselves. I think that’s what you’re seeing with Marcus, he’s expressing himself, he’s scoring goals and it’s great for the team.”

STORY: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney heaped praise on his teammate Marcus Rashford on Thursday (September 22), saying the youngster could develop into a “star” for both United and England.

Rashford, who scored on both his Premier League and Europa League debuts for United last season, is by far the most exciting graduate of United’s academy in years.

“He’s incredible and he come in, he really got thrown in last season when… us as players we weren’t sure he was ready to get thrown into the game (against Midtjylland in the Europa League). He got threw in and he scored two goals and since there he hasn’t looked back,” Rooney said during an interview with former United defender David May on MUTV’s “Thursday Focus” show.

The teenager also scored three minutes into his first senior start for England against Australia in May and bagged a hat-trick on his England Under-21 debut last month.

“He wants to work, he wants to learn. You see some of the younger players nowadays in football, they haven’t really got that attitude. It’s great to see and he’s getting the rewards for it because he’s some talent and if he keeps going he’ll be a real star for this club and for England,” added Rooney.

When asked how much advice he and fellow forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic give to the youngster, Rooney said the important thing was to let him express his talents.

“With players like that you want to let them just play, you don’t want to try and teach them how to play football because they can play football. You want them to just play and have that freedom to go and play and express themselves. I think that’s what you’re seeing with Marcus, he’s expressing himself, he’s scoring goals and it’s great for the team,” said Rooney.

Rashford scored five goals in 11 league appearances last season.
