Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre has premiered it’s new take on Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro”,

Mozart’s opera returned to the famed Moscow stage after a twenty-year break.

It was last performed there in 1995, conducted by Peter Feranec and staged by Joachim Herz.

Conductor William Lacey, the musical director of the new staging, said he wants to show the audience the brilliance of Mozart’s masterpiece.

SOUNDBITE: William Lacey, Conductor “Le Nozze di Figaro”, saying (English):

“Mozart wrote this opera, it’s his piece, and here is his score and this is where everything comes from. So, my job is just to go into the score and to try and understand what he wants and what he is telling us and to do justice to this masterpiece.”

The production is three and a half hours long, and constant twists and turns in the plot means high pressure for performers.

SOUNDBITE: Alexander Vinogradov, Figaro in “Le Nozze di Figaro”, saying (English):

“It is very often forgotten that everything happens over the course of just one day and the full name of opera “Le Nozze di Figaro” is “The Crazy Day or the Marriage of Figaro”. And this crazy day should be crazy, from the very beginning to the very end. And to live through such crazy day… at the end of such a day you are like this (BREATHING OUT) – and the same you feel at the end of the performance – “That’s it, I am exhausted.”

The cast hope the new staging will help regain popularity for an opera that hasn’t often been performed in Russia.
