Santa offers a goodwill message to children

STORY: The days leading up to Christmas in Santa’s village are busy with nearly 60,000 people visiting his home before and around the holidays. As Christmas Eve approaches, the Christmas atmosphere is engulfing the village, as Santa, his elves and Rudolf the reindeer prepare to leave for their around-the-world journey.

Inside the main post office, the year’s most hectic period is under way as the yearly flow of around half of a million letters from children all over the world is culminating in the days before Christmas. Santa’s helpers read all letters and will even send you a reply for a small fee. Some children have written long wish lists and some just want to find out more about the man with a white beard. But visitors to the office also get the chance to post outgoing letters, having the exclusive originating location of “The Arctic Circle” stamped onto them.

This year Santa had a special message for the many children around the world living difficult lives.

“My dear friends, there something I would like to say to you this Christmas. Don’t be afraid and don’t ever forget that miracles can happen. You might be in the middle of times in your life when things are not so good, but then suddenly something wonderful happens and your life can change for good,” said Santa.

“My dear friends I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very very happy New Year, ha, ha, ha, ha.”

The history of Santa’s home being located in northern Finland goes back to a radio announcement in 1927. Finnish radio declared that Santa’s workshop had been found in Korvatunturi near the Russian border. But when Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of US President FDR, visited Rovaniemi in the 1950’s to witness the post-war reconstruction of the war-torn town, the idea of moving Santa’s village here was born. In 1985 the governor of the Finnish province of Lapland declared the area around the town as Santa Claus Land.
