Sarkozy to run again for French presidency

Nicholas Sarkozy is back.

The 61-year old former French President has announced he’s running for president in 2017, saying via twitter,

” I felt I had the strength to lead this battle at a troubled time in our history.”

Sarkozy was unseated from power in 2012 by the now deeply unpopular President Francois Hollande.

Both loved and loathed among right-wing voters, Sarkozy says he will join the conservative Les Republicains party primaries scheduled for November. But he will have to beat more than a dozen other contenders.

Sarkozy brought high drama to France’s highest office.

Days after he was sworn in, his wife left him.

But barely two months later he started dating his current wife, Italian former supermodel Carla Bruni.

A marriage followed that summer and Bruni bore Sarkozy’s fourth and her second child.

But now, with a string of deadly Islamist attacks shaping the political discourse, Sarkozy says his country needs him.

He’s urging France to get tough on immigration, crack down on Islamist militancy and halt the erosion of France’s secular identity.

His first test, the primary, comes on November 20.
