Scuffles at UK post-election demo

The re-election of David Cameron’s Conservatives to govern Britain hasn’t gone down well with everyone.

These protesters outside Conservative Party headquarters in London were confronted by a large police presence.

Later the demonstration moved to Parliament Square and then the entrance to the Prime Minister’s official residence at Downing Street where scuffles erupted.

Protesters hurled bottles, cans and smoke bombs at police in riot gear.

Several people have been arrested.

Some are critical of the prospect of another five years of rule by the Conservatives when they got only 37 per cent of the vote.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) ELLIOT CORNER, GREEN PARTY ACTIVIST, SAYING:

“Seventy-five per cent of the people, of the electorate of this country who voted, didn’t vote for the Conservatives. We need a proportional representation system now.”

Cameron’s government has already enacted tough spending cuts to reduce the budget deficit.

He’s promising more to come after winning an outright Parliamentary majority in national elections on May 7th.
