South Africa’s Zuma tells foreigners they are welcome to stay

Rubber bullets fly through the darkness, Friday, as police in Johannesburg fight running battles with looters.

They’re dealing with a wave of anti-immigrant violence and are trying to deter even more public looting.

Businesses owned by foreign nationals have come under attack… like this car garage that was targeted by firebombs.

President Jacob Zuma canceled a state visit to Indonesia, Saturday, to tame the unrest at home … and give assurances to immigrants that South Africa does want them.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SOUTH AFRICA’S PRESIDENT, JACOB ZUMA, SAYING:

“When we have stopped the violence, they are still welcomed as they came.”

Here in the city of Chatsworth, immigrants waited to board buses provided by their governments to take them back to their home countries.

The anti-immigrant violence broke out two weeks ago after the King of the Zulu nation reportedly said foreigners should leave the country.

… Until it stops, these immigrants say they can’t feel safe in their adoptive home.
