Spain celebrates winners of $2.45 billion lottery

It’s the day of El Gordo, Spain traditional Christmas lottery, and the atmosphere is electric outside the building in Madrid where the drawing will be held.

Many hold up signs with their number, in hopes of influencing fate, and snagging a share of the 2-point-4 billion dollars in prize money.

“This is a working class town and I’m very happy that the prize has been won here.”

It’s the largest lottery in the world, and one of the oldest.

Spain has held the drawing every year since 1812, even through its civil war.

But for the winners, this year is the only one that matters.
