Sri Lanka detains 34 Indian fishermen

Rameswaram, Oct 27 (ANI): Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday detained 34 Indian fishermen and their seven boats on the charges of poaching in the territorial waters of the island nation. The incident happened early morning when the fishermen were out for fishing. Out of the 34 fishermen, 23 belong to Nagapattinam town and the rest were from Rameswaram. The fishermen community in Rameswaram was shocked to hear about the detention and demanded immediate help from the state and central government. He further said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must speak to his Sri Lankan counterpart on the issue. Reportedly, the detained men were kept in three groups at Talaimannar, Kangesanthurai and Oorkavalthurai naval bases. In another incident in Rameswaram, Sri Lanka arrested 26 Indian fishermen and detained 24 boats.
