The handful of surviving migrants from what may be the deadliest shipwreck in the Mediterranean have been brought to shore in Sicily.

Twenty seven people arrived in the port of Catania aboard a Coast Guard ship Monday night.

One other man was said to have been bought by helicopter to a hospital.

They are the few survivors who have been found from a ship that overturned and sank off the coast of Libya.

“They were very tired and very traumatised. One of them was taken to the hospital, the others received medical attention, they had new clothes distributed to them and had some food before being transported to reception facility.”

Malta’s prime minister said as many as 900 people may have died in the disaster.

So far, 24 bodies have been recovered. They were brought to shore on Malta on Monday.

Authorities say the captain of the ship and his deputy have been arrested on suspicion of people smuggling.
