Suspicious package removed, destroyed in New Jersey
Police in New Jersey detonated a suspicious package early monday in Elizabeth, New Jersey after a series of attacks in various places that shook the U.S. over the weekend.
Police say two men scavenging through a garbage can near a train station found a backpack that continued pipes and wires.
Elizabeth Mayor, Chris Bollwage.
SOUNDBITE (English) ELIZABETH MAYOR CHRIS BOLLWAGE SAYING:
“…they saw that there were some wires attached to some pipe, dropped it then they walked over to police headquarters, reported what they found. Police came over, looked at it and called the Union County bomb squad. The bomb squad sent a drone int the location, they verified that it is suspicious at this time and it may be a bomb.”
The incident comes a day after a blast in Manhattan which injured 29 people, a stabbing at a mall in Minnesota that wounded nine, and a pipe bomb explosion in Seaside Park New Jersey in which no one was injured.
The explosion in the New York’s popular Chelsea neighborhood late on Saturday involved a pressure-cooker bomb packed with shrapnel. A similar unexploded device was found a few blocks away later that night.
Earlier on Saturday, a pipe bomb exploded along the route of a running race in the New Jersey beach town of Seaside Park.
Police are investigating whether the incidents are connected.
