Taiwan authorities say a bus crash in July in which 26 people died, mostly Chinese tourists, was the result of suicide by the driver. Paul Chapman reports.
Taiwan tour bus crash ‘suicide’
Twenty-four Chinese tourists, a tour guide and the driver died when this bus crashed in Taiwan last July.
Now Taiwanese investigators have revealed the crash happened because the driver deliberately killed himself at the wheel.
They say he sprayed his seat with fuel he’d bought a few days earlier and ignited it.
As he was engulfed in flames the bus crashed into a fence.
The bus was taking the tourists to Taoyuan airport at the end of an eight-day trip.
But prosecutors say that because the driver died no-one can be charged with any offence, and no-one is responsible for compensating the families of the other victims.
Taiwan is a popular destination for mainland Chinese tourists.
They in turn provide a major source of income although accidents involving Chinese tourists aren’t uncommon.
