1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GYMNASTICS DOUBLE GOLD AND ONE BRONZE MEDAL WINNER MAX WHITLOCK SAYING:

“We done our job out there, it is good to be back home, I’m very proud and hopefully it’s inspired a lot of people to get started in gymnastics”

3. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SAM QUEK, WOMEN’S HOCKEY GOLD WINNER SAYING:

“Oh it’s just unbelievable, I mean we are so overwhelmed about what is going on right now. Everyone in Great Britain has just gone 100 percent for hockey and I am so proud that we have, you know, fundamentally kept funding, inspired generations to pick up a stick and to just crack on, so we are glad that we have done that for the sport”

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) OLYMPIC 100M BREASTSTROKE CHAMPION AND WORLD RECORD HOLDER ADAM PEATY SAYING:

“I mean there has been so much negative media about security, crime rate and everything else. But you know Brazil itself, and Rio, was absolutely beautiful and the people were some of the best in the world. Even though you haven’t got much language, and not many people can speak English, you can celebrate together and absolutely take in the full Games experience which is an absolute honour for us and there was not one time when I felt really unsafe, and I was out pretty much everywhere, pretty much, in Rio so it was great.”

7. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH TRIATHLON GOLD MEDALLIST, ALISTAIR BROWNLEE, SAYING:

“Yeah you don’t set up to break records or do things for your sport. You set out because you love racing and you love the sport, you love training hard and you love competing. And so that’s what you do it for but that said I’m very proud of where I’ve taken triathlon from a, not me personally, but where it’s gone and I’ve been part of that in the last 10 years, from a sport that most people probably haven’t heard of to now people have heard of it and are following it. So it’s been a fantastic progression.”

STORY: Many of Team GB’s medal winners arrived back in the United Kingdom of Tuesday (August 23) to a heroes’ welcome from family, friends and fans.

The team won 67 medals in all, 27 of them gold, to take second place in the final medal table, behind only the United States.

Four years ago in the London Olympics, the team was beaten into third place by China. This time China was third, behind Great Britain.

The breadth of the team’s medal winning was surprising to many. There were medal winners in 15 sports, from individual, such as Justin Rose (golf) and Andy Murray (tennis), to team, such as women’s hockey and women’s team pursuit cycling. The wins and places were also distributed across Olympic venues, including pool, shooting range, open water, track, arena, and gymnasium.

Max Whitlock, who won two gold medals in individual gymnastic events and a bronze in the gymnastic all-around, said:

“We done our job out there, it is good to be back home, I’m very proud and hopefully it’s inspired a lot of people to get started in gymnastics.”

Hockey gold medal winner Sam Quek said she hoped they had inspired other generations to pick up a stick.

Adam Peaty, who won gold and silver and broke his own world record and the Brownlee brothers, who took gold and silver in the men’s triathlon, also spoke to reporters on their return to London on Tuesday (August 23).

The 21-year-old swimmer was conscious of breaking historic records by winning his gold medal, while the Brownlee brothers looked towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but plan to have a break from training first.
