STORY: River Radamus looks set to become a name to remember as the 18-year-old claimed his third Youth Olympic gold medal in Lillehammer on Wednesday (February 17), winning the Grand Slalom to add to his Alpine Combined and Super-G golds won earlier in the week.

Local fans were demanding the 18-year-old’s autograph and singing his name after Radamus eased to victory in the Grand Slalom in a combined time of 2:35:05, defeating Yohei Koyama of Japan into second my 1:07 seconds. Germany’s Anton Grammel claimed bronze.

Radamus, who hails from the skiing capital of the United States in Colorado, said he still couldn’t believe he had defeated such a talented field of young athletes.

“I am buzzing. You can’t get this grin off my face for another couple of days,” said Radmus after the race.

“I couldn’t have even dreamt this in my wildest dreams. It has been a real honour to compete with some of these guys, who are the best in the world for their age, and I have had a lot of really close races so I have just been able to come out on top. It has been really fortunate of me to win these when so many other people could of,” he added.

Radamus, almost unbelievably, could be heading for a fourth Youth Olympic gold as he competes in the Men’s Slalom on Friday (February 19).

However, he is, for now, just trying to keep his feet on the ground and enjoy his time at the Olympic park in Lillehammer for the remainder of the games.

“My coaches have always told me that I am my own harshest critic and so I try, as much as I can, to take that pressure of myself but it is tough to because I am trying to be a perfectionist at the same time,” Radamus admitted.

“So, we will see. I am racing the slalom in the next couple of days and I am just going to go out there and have as much fun as I can.”

Lillehammer 2016 is the second ever Youth Olympic Games after the inaugural event in Innsbruck in 2012. The next event will be in Lausanne, Switzerland in four years time.
