1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVID HAGGERTY, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL TENNIS FEDERATION, SPEAKING ABOUT THEIR PLANS TO FIX VENUE CITIES FOR THE DAVIS AND FED CUP FINALS, SAYING:

“By having clarity and understanding of a fixed site we’ll be able to promote it and maximise it. We think it will unlock some revenue which will be good to help the nations really promote and develop the growth of tennis which is our mission, so taking the money not just from the home nation that wins or that hosts the event but being able to distribute it to the nations that need the money to grow and promote the game.”

“One of the benefits in Fed Cup as an example, we have an eight team world group, we would now be able to go to a 16 team world group which would be fantastic for the competition. It also, from a Davis Cup perspective, would give us the chance to really be able to know where we are going to be, when we are going to be able to play, which the players don’t have now.”

“Well we would anticipate 2018 as being the first year that we would have this competition. What we will do over the next nine months or so is talk to all the stakeholders, get the feedback, go through this process, develop a strong plan with rigour, be able to talk to the nations, because at the end of the day the nations will have to approve this at our annual general meeting and then if that happens, 2018 here we come.”

STORY: Tennis chiefs plan to adopt the NFL’s Super Bowl model, by selecting fixed venue cities in advance for their showcase Davis and Fed Cup finals.

The switch from one of the two finalists hosting the decider is part of a broader strategy aimed at growing the men’s and women’s international team events.

“By having clarity and understanding of a fixed site we’ll be able to promote it and maximise it,” International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty told Reuters in London on Monday (September 19).

“We think it will unlock some revenue which will be good to help the nations really promote and develop the growth of tennis which is our mission, so taking the money not just from the home nation that wins or that hosts the event but being able to distribute it to the nations that need the money to grow and promote the game.”

Other options under consideration include a tweak of formats to reduce the length of matches, and expanding the top-tier Fed Cup competition to feature 16 nations.

The ITF membership will vote on the plans next August. In American football’s Super Bowl, the host city is selected well in advance, usually three to five years before the game. Similarly, European soccer’s governing body UEFA selects the host city for the Champions League final two years in advance.

Haggerty, elected president a year ago, hopes to have the hosting system in place by 2018.

“We would anticipate 2018 as being the first year that we would have this competition.”

“What we will do over the next nine months or so is talk to all the stakeholders, get the feedback, go through this process, develop a strong plan with rigour, be able to talk to the nations, because at the end of the day the nations will have to approve this at our annual general meeting and then if that happens, 2018 here we come.”

Croatia will host Argentina for the 2016 Davis Cup title, after the semi-finals last weekend. But a host city has yet been named.
