3. SOUNDBITE (English) TESCO CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, DAVE LEWIS, SAYING:

“Today as you say we’re announcing a very significant stage in Tesco’s history, it’s a 6.4 billion (pound) statutory loss, but it’s a loss that’s driven by 7 billion (pound) of one-off charges and that’s about recognising the situation which the business finds itself in. So how do I feel? I feel as a business we find ourselves in a tough economic and market situation, we’ve done that before. But we’ve also got to recognise, and we do in the numbers we presented today, that perhaps in the last couple of years we’ve not been as competitive as we should. We’ve just recognised that.

5. SOUNDBITE (English) TESCO CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, DAVE LEWIS, SAYING:

“First and foremost I’m going to make it profitable again by getting back to what Tesco has always been good at, is putting the customer right at the centre. If we can continue to give him or her things they can’t get anywhere else then our business will be fine. The question for us, and I’ve identified it today, there’s 400 million of cost savings that we’ve identified, that gives us an opportunity to recover the margin, or indeed continue to invest. So I can see opportunities to recover the margin, I can see opportunities to improve the business, but right at the centre of it is “do I give customers exactly what they want.”
