Hundreds of residents of Baan Nam Khem in Phang-nga province gathered on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Over 1,400 people in Baan Nam Khem were killed in the catastrophe 11 years ago. The village was the hardest hit among the six provinces along Thailand’s western coast affected by the disaster.

In the years that followed the tsunami, residents lived in fear of the killer waves. Local leader Thongchai Hanchor tried to reassure residents that such a tragedy could never happen again.

“Now we are strong, we are prepared, we have learned and adapted should any natural disaster occur,” he said.

Villagers lit candles on the beach to remember those who died in the waves.

The 2004 tsunami, triggered by a massive earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, killed 226,000 people in 14 countries.
