Thailand is in mourning after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The palace says the king died in a Bangkok hospital on Thursday.

News of his death drew thousands of supporters into the streets.

“We will make him proud when he looks down and he will feel proud. We have to be strong. Thailand has to be strong and move forward.”

“I should have been born when the king was younger. I would love to have seen progress (during the king’s rein) instead of loss.”

King Bhumibol reigned for seven decades after ascending the throne in 1946.

The country’s prime minister announced a year of mourning, starting on Friday and, for 30 days, flags will flying at half mast.

The late king’s son, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is expected to become Thailand’s new king.
