What’s a better bet than a Hollywood love story based on a best-selling book? When the stars fall for each other in real life while filming it.

That’s the promise of “The Light Between Oceans,” a heart-wrenching tale based on M. L. Stedman’s 2013 novel of the same name, and starring Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender.

The story, set in Australia, is the tragic tale of a lighthouse keeper and his wife, who have suffered two miscarriages when a baby in a boat washes ashore on their remote island.

They decide to raise the child as their own, until they meet the child’s real mother years later.

“Yes. I would have given the baby back. . . I would have given the baby back. Would you have kept the baby?”

“It’s hard to say.”

“It’s so hard to say because of what they go through. It’s totally feasible I would say. Absolutely. I totally believe it.”

“I remember when I read the book and went online because they have this book website where you can read and a lot of people commented on the book and it’s really there you realize it’s like fifty-fifty and it depends on, you know, your own personal experience and life.”

“It’s always easy to say in hindsight, isn’t it? It’s what you would do in the reality of the situation that’s another thing.”

The couple had briefly met a year before filming on the movie began in New Zealand in late 2014.

“But we hadn’t really… we met properly in Wellington in the rehearsals for the first time.”

Director Derek Cianfrance asked the pair to live together in a remote lighthouse for a month during filming, and by the end of 2014, news broke that they were dating.

You can check out their on-screen chemistry when the film releases in U.S. theaters on September 2nd.
