Thousands of people joined German political and religious leaders at a Muslim community rally against Islamophobia on Tuesday.

Speakers at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate remembered the victims of the Paris jihadist attacks last week and called for religious tolerance and unity.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and half of her cabinet were among the guests at a wreath-laying ceremony outside the French embassy and listened as an iman recited Koranic verses condemning the taking of life.

President Joachim Gauck was to address the event, organised by the Central Council of Muslims under the banner “Let’s be there for each other. Terror: not in our name!”

“Today we all want to express our solidarity with the French people,” said the chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, in his opening address.

“The terrorists did not win and terrorists won’t win in future. Today we say with the French and many people around the world: ‘Je suis Charlie’,” he added, employing the international message of solidarity with the artists killed at the Charlie Hebdo magazine.

He said the Islamist killers who acted in the name of their faith had committed “blasphemy” and betrayed their religion, and called for an open and cosmopolitan society in Germany.

“We all are Germany,” he said, without mentioning by name the new right-wing movement the “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident”, or PEGIDA, which drew 25,000 marchers Monday night in the eastern city of Dresden.

Mourners taking part in the vigil held signs that said “Against hatred and violence”.
