‘Tis the season for holiday shopping in Paris

Sharing is Caring

As Christmas approaches, Paris retailers say they see a slight rebound in shopping activity after November’s Islamist militant attacks caused a decrease in sales. Jillian Kitchener reports.

‘Tis the season for holiday shopping in Paris

The spirit of shopping is in the air this holiday season, and Paris is no exception.

The General Manager of Printemps Department Store says spending was down 30% the week after November’s Islamist militant attacks. But he says consumer spending has climbed some 20% since then.

Many shoppers say the magnitude of the tragedy is still on their minds, but according to this woman, it shouldn’t stop Parisians from living their lives.

Living amid heightened security… especially in key areas downtown, like the Christmas holiday market on the Champs Elysees, where retailers say, they have seen sales rise here too.

“We had a rebound end of November. The weekend after people started to come back and I was a little surprised because I could understand that they didn’t want to be part of a crowd on the Champs Elysees, and be exposed if anything happens. But no, people started to come back and party.”

With Christmas approaching, the crowds — and the festive retail atmosphere — have made a return to the city of lights.
