STORY: Santa may want to install air conditioning and heavy-duty wiper blades on his sleigh for his Christmas Eve ride into parts of the U.S.

Temperatures shattered records on Thursday in cities along the East Coast.

In New York’s Times Square, temperature gauges hit 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), easily topping the old record of 63 degrees, set back in 1996.

“I was shocked,” said tourist Matthew Anderson from Australia. “I’d come complete with a big fluffy jacket and all that sort of stuff, ready to freeze, and this is no different to a nice pleasant day in Brisbane or Sidney.”

But Gary Brooks from Atlanta, Georgia would have preferred the weather to be a little colder.

“It feels a bit more Christmas-y with snow, but with it being warm I guess it’s good because it allows you to get out and walk and enjoy things without feeling like you have to hurry up and get inside,” he said.

Meteorologists think the city will have its warmest December ever. The high temperatures were expected to continue for several days.
