Tripura farmers grow orchids as an alternative farming
Tripura, Jan 27 (ANI): Blooming orchids bring cheer to many farmers in Tripura. And to make this alternative farming popular, the Tripura forest department has started orchid cultivation-cum-training centre at Gandhigram on the outskirts of capital Agartala. The prime idea is to promote orchid cultivation in the rural areas and create employment opportunities. Suitable agro-climatic condition, fertile soil, abundant moisture and sub-tropical climate offer immense scope for production of a wide variety of orchids in Tripura. A greenhouse facilitated with the latest techniques in orchid cultivation has been created with Mahatama Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) fund. Many farmers are being trained and educated about orchid farming techniques so that they can tell their fellow farmers after returning to their respective villages. The forest department is also providing free plant materials, fertilizer and pesticides besides explaining them about the proper utilisation of the resources.
