Trump holds ground on Cruz citizenship challenge

U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump and rival Ted Cruz ended a truce Thursday night during the latest Fox Business News debate in South Carolina.

Trump focused much of his fury on whether Cruz, who was born in Canada to American mother and a Cuban father, could even run for office.

The U.S. Constitution says only “natural born” citizens can become president of the United States.

“This is a very big issue because even if there’s a 5 percent chance, or a 2 percent chance, and you’ve been seeing the same people as I have – you’ve probably interviewed them. You have many lawyers who feel he can’t run because of the fact that he was born in Canada. And was a Canadian citizen until 15 months ago. He was a Canadian citizen. I don’t know how you can be a senator and a Canadian citizen.”

Cruz has taken the lead in some polls of Iowa Republican voters.

The Iowa caucus is on February 1st.
