Story: U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Saturday ( August 27) he would seek to develop a tracking system to ensure illegal immigrants who overstay their visas are removed from the United States.

Under fire for giving mixed messages on his signature issue, illegal immigration, Trump used a campaign speech in Des Moines to provide some fresh details.

“I am going to build a great border wall, institute nationwide e-verify, stop illegal immigrants from accessing welfare and entitlements, and develop an exit-entry tracking system to ensure those who overstay their visas are quickly removed,” Trump said.

Trump spoke to a crowd who turned out for Sen. Joni Ernst’s second annual “Roast and Ride” in Des Moines, an event that combines motorcycles, food and politics. He warned them that if his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, wins in November, the U.S. would have open borders.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Clinton leading Trump by 5 percentage points among likely voters. That poll, released on Friday (August 26). shows her lead down from a peak this month of 12 points. Clinton, a former secretary of state, has led real estate developer Trump in the poll since Democrats and Republicans ended their national conventions and formally nominated their presidential candidates in July.
