After urging Russians to stop travelling to Turkey, Ankara is bracing for further pain in other sectors after the shooting down of a Russian jet. As David Pollard reports, food and energy are possible targets.

Turkey braces for Russian economic pain

It started with a clash over airspace.

Now it’s moving to the airwaves.

A media appearance by Russia’s agriculture minister to announce a tightening of controls on Turkish food imports.

His boss, Vladimir Putin, also took a turn in front of the cameras.

“It seems that the Turkish leadership is deliberately driving relations between Russia and Turkey into a dead end. We are sorry about it.”

And Turkey’s President Erdogan – fiercely dismissing suggestions that joint projects with Russia could be scrapped.

“There are threats – ‘Joint projects may be halted, ties could be cut’? Is it fitting for politicians to adopt that stance?”

Measures to control Turkish food imports don’t amount to an embargo yet.

But food is potentially a commercial victim since Turkey shot down a Russian jet.

Russian energy supplies and joint projects could be on the hit list – measures to halt or restrict those also drawn up.

Though Russia’s own economic problems could stay its hand, at least partially.

“Imports and exports between Russia and Turkey and Russia have been falling in recent months … Actually, the ability of Russia to inflict substantial pain is probably reduced now versus where it was a couple of years ago.”

But Turkish airspace may well become a no-go zone for Russian tourists.

The head of Russia’s tourism agency, Rostourism, says cooperation with Turkey is to be halted.
