Clean-up operations got underway across Hainan province in southern China on Saturday in the wake of Typhoon Dianmu.

The typhoon made landfall on Thursday, dumping heavy rain across the region.

Drone footage shown by state broadcaster CCTV showed many towns and villages still underwater on Friday. Some villages had seen more than a metre of rainfall between August 14-19.

As the weather returned to normal on Saturday, workers went out onto the streets to clean up piles of debris and rubbish.

Dianmu made landfall in Vietnam on Friday afternoon, state media added.
