Typhoon grounds flights in Japan

Typhoon Lionrock approaches northeast Japan, a region devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami five years ago.

Thousands of people have been told to evacuate and more than 100 flights were cancelled.

Moving north from the Pacific Ocean, the typhoon is expected to bring winds gusting at more than 170 kilometres an hour.

It missed Tokyo, offering some relief to travellers.

“I was very nervous about my flight, so I came to the airport a bit earlier. I hope the plane takes off fine.”

While Lionrock will reduce to a tropical storm when it makes landfall later on Tuesday, it’s expected to dump more than a month’s rain in a single day.
