UK suffers more flood misery

The village of Whalley in north west England is among the casualties of the torrential rain pounding parts of the UK.

Up to 120 millimetres of rain was expected in some areas of the region.

Troops have been drafted in to help build flood defences but there are fears there’s still more to come.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) LIEUTENANT COLONEL HAMISH CORMACK, SECOND BATTALION, DUKE OF LANCASHIRE REGIMENT, SAYING:

“We’re not yet at the point where we know how bad it’s going to be. The water levels are still rising so it’s very much a wait-and-see, and continue to plan for the worst case.”

The UK weather forecaster’s issued several rare ‘red’ weather warnings for the north-west. They’re only issued where there’s a risk of danger to life.

Forecasts for the area suggest the rain will ease over the coming days before more downpours next week.

More than 300 flood warnings are in place across the country.

In early December more than 5,200 properties in the north west were affected by flooding.
