Ukraine says possible peace talks in Minsk on Sunday

/ Warsaw (Poland) – 17 December 2014

Trilateral peace talks towards ending the Ukraine crisis could take place on Sunday in Minsk, according to the conflict-ridden country’s president Petro Poroshenko.

“We agreed for the contact group to hold a video conference on Thursday and Friday,” he said, referring to representatives from Moscow, Kiev, the OSCE and the rebels controlling parts of eastern Ukraine.

“I hope this group will be able to meet on Sunday in Minsk,” he told reporters after talks with Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski in Warsaw.

He added that troop withdrawal and a closure of the Ukrainian-Russian border could put an end to the crisis “in three weeks”.

Poroshenko and his French, German and Russian counterparts spoke over the phone hours earlier and agreed they wanted the contact group to meet “as soon as possible in the interests of carrying out the Minsk pact,” the Kremlin said, referring to a peace deal reached in September.

The telephone conversation came after the White House confirmed that US President Barack Obama will sign into law fresh sanctions against Russia.

The eight-month-old conflict between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine has left at least 4,634 dead and 10,243 wounded, and displaced more than 1.1 million people, according to new UN figures.
