Union sees improvement in GM talks

Canada’s auto workers union said all issues are on the table in negotiations with the U.S. auto maker. As Fred Katayama reports, workers could walk off the job if a deal isn’t reached by midnight Monday.

Union sees improvement in GM talks

Nearly 4,000 Canadian workers at GM could walk off the job if their union doesn’t reach a labor deal with the automaker by its midnight Monday deadline. Union officials sense improvement in the talks that resumed Monday morning, which may include the key bone of contention, the Oshawa Ontario plant, says Reuters Canada news editor Jeffrey Hodgson:

“What they have said is that everything is on the table, which seems to indicate that that issue is being addressed. It’s part of the discussions, but they’re making clear all aspects of what they need for agreement are there.” 12:05:00

That issue Hodgson referred to: the Oshawa car plant that employs 2500 workers. The union wants the company to commit to producing new products there. The company says it would only make decisions about future products at the plant after a labor deal. Canada has been losing out to the southern U.S. states and Mexico in the race to attract new auto investments.

A strike could affect U.S. output. This Canadian plant just northwest of Niagara Falls produces engines that also go into vehicles GM sells in the U.S.

GM shares, which which were upgraded by Morgan Stanley Monday, sprinted higher.
