EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH URUGUAY COACH, OSCAR TABAREZ

“On the squad that we have finally got, we have the possibilities and the men to play with two forwards, with only one forward and two centre midfielders and three creative players from behind. There is also the possibility of playing with three midfielders, which we have done – we did it in Chile and we did it in Morocco with different outcome in terms of performance. But we could also use three central midfielders and three forwards who would also help defending by joining the midfield, practically playing 4-1, 4-1. So, from a positional point of view here there will be no problems and we are ready for any possibility.”

“In fact, the upcoming Copa America has an important degree of difficulty because of the participation of many teams that, for different circumstances, come with important backgrounds. Argentina seem to me to have the most potential because of everything it did in qualifying in the World Cup – It reached the final of the World Cup – because it [Argentina] has Messi who is absolutely an individual factor but impossible to ignore. [Another important team is] Brazil, which has a coach that had won many important things that allowed Brazil to qualify, to be at the World Cup of South Africa. He just lost a match with Holland and was out (of the 2010 World Cup). And now looking at all of Brazil’s performances, they have recovered and I think we are going to have a Brazil that is very strong and that will always be a candidate (to win).”

STORY: Uruguay national soccer team can count on a variety of players and tactics to fill the void left by their star player Luis Suarez in the upcoming Copa America, coach Oscar Tabarez said in Montevideo on Tuesday (April 28).

Uruguay will compete in the June tournament without the Barcelona forward who was suspended for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match last year.

Uruguay will also be without forward Diego Forlan, who left the team in March, nor Martin Caceres, who is recovering from a fractured ankle.

“On the squad that we have finally got, we have the possibilities and the men to play with two forwards, with only one forward and two centre midfielders and three creative players from behind,” Tabarez said in an exclusive interview to Reuters on Tuesday (April 28).

“There is also the possibility of playing with three midfielders, which we have done – we did it in Chile and we did it in Morocco with different outcome in terms of performance. But we could also use three central midfielders and three forwards who would also help defending by joining the midfield, practically playing 4-1, 4-1. So, from a positional point of view here there will be no problems and we are ready for any possibility,” he added.

Tabarez acknowledged that 15-times Copa America winners Uruguay would face stiff competition from South American giants Brazil and Argentina.

Uruguay are in Group B with Argentina, Paraguay and Jamaica.

“Argentina seem to me to have the most potential because of everything it did in qualifying in the World Cup – it reached the final of the World Cup – because it [Argentina] has Messi who is absolutely an individual factor but impossible to ignore.

“[Another important team is] Brazil, which has a coach that had won many important things that allowed Brazil to qualify, to be at the World Cup of South Africa,” he said about Dunga who, after being sacked as Brazil’s coach after losing to the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, had been brought back to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari after Brazil’s humiliation at the 2014 World Cup.

Since then, Dunga has led Brazil to eight straight wins in friendly internationals, including victories over Argentina, France and Chile.

“He just lost a match with Holland and was out (of the 2010 World Cup). And now looking at all of Brazil’s performances, they have recovered and I think we are going to have a Brazil that is very strong and that will always be a candidate (to win),” he added.

Tabarez’s team will come to the regional competition as defending champions, after winning the title four years ago in Argentina.

Uruguay has won the World Cup twice in 1930 and 1950 and have also two Olympic gold medals.
