STORY: Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany said on Thursday (November 26) that his first season with Ferrari has been “phenomenal” and hopes next year will be even better.

Speaking ahead of the last Formula 1 race of the season being staged in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Vettel said his team would push hard over the weekend race to finish the season on a high note.

“It was difficult to know what to expect going in with a new team but I think we had a fantastic year, but there’s one more race to go so we’ll try our best and see how we get on this weekend but so far for sure the season has been phenomenal,” he told reporters at Ferrari World amusement park in the United Arab Emirates capital.

Vettel and team mate Kimi Raikkonen of Finland were the closest challengers to Formula One champions Mercedes this year, but second best is not good enough for the Ferrari duo.

Raikkonen said though the team did “better than last year,” they were “still nowhere near (being champions) but obviously hope for it.

“There’s a way to go and another year next year so I’m sure we can do better,” said Raikkonen.

Vettel has won three races in 2015, the only non-Mercedes driver to stand on top of the podium in 17 rounds so far.

Ferrari have not won a drivers’ world championship since 2007, when Raikkonen succeeded against the odds, but failed to win a race last year.

However, they have closed the gap in engine performance this season despite Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton retaining both their titles.
