As children, many fled the Vietnam War with their parents to start a new life in America.

Now this country has turned into ‘the land of opportunity’ and a wave of returnees is choosing Vietnam over the U.S.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REUTERS REPORTER, TARA JOSEPH, SAYING:

“I’m in Ho Chi Minh City, once called Saigon, to see how this country is faring 40 years after the end of a brutal war. And Vietnamese Americans are making a big contribution here.”

Meet Tristan Ngo – he owns two popular restaurants in a city that’s turned into Vietnam’s commercial capital.

This one serves up breakfasts you’d expect to find in New York or LA.

“I want to bring the positive from – as part of being Vietnamese and being American. I want to bring something back and say hey, you know, this is going to be great again.”

Capitalist ventures run by Tristan and other children of the thousands who left are now thriving in this communist country.

They range from restauranteurs to lawyers, teachers, and filmmakers like Jenni Trang Le who produces box office hits here.

But it’s not all a bed of roses as Vietnam poses some sizable challenges including strict censorship rules.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FILMMAKER, JENNI TRANG LE, SAYING:

“If you do an action film it can’t be too gory, can’t be too bloody. If you do a love film it can’t have too much sex. You definitely can’t do anything that has to do with the government or anything political.”

Still Vietnamese Americans living here agree this country is on the rise.

Despite some heart-wrenching poverty in some parts, a rising middle class and a generation that has grown up after the war are driving it forward – and fast.
