Violence greets Kerry Mideast arrival

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Tel Aviv for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders aimed at halting the latest wave of violence.

Even as he arrived in the region further bloodshed was taking place.

A Palestinian man drove a car into two Israeli soldiers and a police officer in the Occupied West Bank, wounding all three.

The driver was shot and wounded by Israeli forces.

It’s the latest in an eight-week campaign of stabbings, shootings, and car rammings.

Palestinian attacks have killed 20 Israelis and an American.

At least 86 Palestinians have died, some while carrying out attacks, others in clashes with Israeli forces.

Kerry says he’s in the region to seek concrete steps to calm the situation.

“I’m here today to talk with the prime minister about ways that we can work together, all of us, the international community, to push back against terrorism, to push back against senseless violence, and to find a way forward to restore calm and begin to provide the opportunities that most reasonable people in every part of the world are seeking for themselves and for their families.”

Last month a U.S. State Department official said Israel had a responsibility to protect its citizens but cited reports of what he said many would consider excessive use of force.
