Volunteers prepare special lunch for Italian quake survivors

These survivors of an earthquake that devastated the town of Amatrice, Italy are taking comfort in the ultimate comfort food —

They’re eating servings of the pasta dish their town made famous — pasta All’Amatriciana.

A team of volunteers cooked this very special lunch for them.

Survivors say it is literally, a taste of home.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) LOCAL RESIDENT MARCELLA, SAYING:

“This pasta reminds us of the past but hopefully it will also lead us forward.”

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) LOCAL RESIDENT, VINCENZO FORTINI, SAYING:

“This is a great opportunity to try and defeat people’s sadness, against the earthquake. We will eat and we will drink! And only later we will start to rebuild.”

They were scheduled to hold a festival in honor of their famous creation this weekend.

Instead, they’re living in a tent camp in the nearby town of Sant’ Angelo, while emergency workers continue to comb the ruins, searching for the bodies of those who are still missing.

They’re also scavenging for anything that can be salvaged from the disaster, like these wheels of cheese, providing a taste of hope to the quake’s traumatized survivors.
