STORY: Norwegian driver Andreas Mikkelsen was able to capitalise on a mistake made by his Volkswagen teammate Sebastien Ogier in Rally Germany and take a lead.

Both of the early morning’s stages took place in damp conditions, proving a challenge for drivers to navigate.

The first stage saw Volkswagen’s Ogier take the lead before he missed a hairpin during the second stage and dropped behind.

It meant the French racer had to reverse and retry the turn, which saw him drop 8.7 seconds to Mikkelsen.

The 27 year-old Norwegian, Mikkelsen, came in second-fastest on both of the opening stages and found himself 2.7 seconds ahead of Thierry Neuville, who races for Hyundai Motorsport.

Mikkelsen was able to hold off Neuville in both the third and fourth stages and was helped when his Belgian rival made a mistake at a tight hairpin in stage 4.

The day finished with Mikkelsen 2.9 seconds ahead of his closest challenger, Neuville.
