“I was used to playing with much younger squads, when you build a stadium because you don’t have the resources. Now today I have a team of more experienced players who are for me, you know, top football players, you have some exceptions but the squad is between 24 and 30 (years old). Basically that’s where you have a good combination of physical strength and experience but we want to keep the fact to give the chance to young players and get the mixture right. I say that because Hector (Bellerin) sits next to me.”

STORY: Arsenal’s long-serving manager Arsene Wenger says that his squad this season posseses the right mix of youth and experience to go further in the Champions League.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the opening clash of this season’s campaign against Paris St Germain on Tuesday (September 13), Wenger said that the financial restrictions posed on the club as they paid to move into their new stadium had hindered the retention of experienced players in the past.

However, now Wenger believes that, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Laurent Koscielny coming into their prime, Arsenal are better poised to go further in a competition they have never won.

I say that because Hector (Bellerin) sits next to me,” said Wenger, joking about the 21-year-old Spanish full-backs age.

For the last 16 years in succession Arsenal has reached the second stage of the competition, only to suffer the frustration of defeat in the first knockout round for six seasons in a row.

Along with PSG, they must be regarded as favourites to qualify again from a group also including Basel and Bulgarian side Ludogorets.
