STORY: Arsene Wenger hailed the contribution of Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil on Monday (December 30) as Arsenal go into the New Year top of the Premier League.

After a stuttering start to his Arsenal career since his move from Real Madrid in 2013 Ozil has hit a rich vein of form this season, scoring three league goals alongside 16 assists to help the Gunners lead the table on goal difference from Leicester City.

Ozil was on the scoresheet on Monday when Arsenal beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Emirates and his assist for Gabriel in the same game sees him close in on Thierry Henry’s record of 20 set in the 2002-03 season.

Wenger says hard work and maturity are the main reasons for Ozil’s success.

“His main work was when he was injured for a long period he worked very hard physically. He is a complete athlete. I believe as well he has grown in stature on the mental front, takes responsibilities, takes leadership in the team and on that front he has improved tremendously and he looks much more determined to lead the team than when he arrived,” said the Frenchman.

Wenger says he will be busy in the January transfer window as he seeks reinforcements to keep the Gunners on top of the Premier League, although he would not be drawn on names, however, despite British media reports that Basel’s Egyptian international midfielder Mohamed Elneny was set to become his first signing of 2016.

“I will be busy yes, I am already. I said already one month ago we are a bit short at the moment to deal with all the competitions we face, especially in midfield. We will be busy, yes,” he said.

Wenger needs cover in central midfield with Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere all sidelined with injuries.

Elneny has impressed at Basel and reports have suggested Arsenal have already agreed a fee with the Swiss side.

Southampton’s Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama could be another target, having handed in a transfer request last summer, although the Saints are likely to resist.
